How are Your Oral Hygiene Habits?

A healthy smile shows. Luckily, anyone can practice simple, everyday measures that are designed to keep your smile feeling and looking its best. Our Sun Prairie, WI, dentist, Dr. Robert Carpenter, understands that life gets hectic sometimes, but maintaining good oral health should always be a top priority if you want to keep that smile for the rest of your life. How do you keep your smile healthy? Here’s how:

Brush Twice a Day

You would be surprised to discover just how many people don’t brush more than once a day; however, if you really want to remove plaque and prevent tartar buildup, then you need to brush first thing in the morning and again at night right before bedtime. This is the only way to keep plaque buildup down. Set a timer for 2 minutes and make sure you are brushing for at least that long.

Don’t Forget to Floss

You need to floss once a day to thoroughly remove plaque and food from between teeth. While a toothbrush is great for cleaning front, back, and chewing surfaces of teeth it won’t be able to thoroughly clean between teeth. This is a job for floss! Make sure to use a generous amount of floss each and every time (usually about 18 inches of floss). Wind it tightly around your fingers and gently move the floss back and forth between each tooth, sliding it up and down against the tooth to remove plaque. Remember to use a clean section of floss for each tooth.

Consider a Mouthwash

While there are some mouthwashes out there that only mask bad breath but don’t treat the source, our Sun Prairie general dentist can provide you with a proper mouth rinse that can reduce oral bacteria and plaque. This can be particularly helpful for children, teens, and adults who are at an increased risk for cavities and gum disease.

Avoid Sugar

As you already know, sugar negatively impacts the health of your smile and the more you consume the worse it can get. Those who eat a lot of sugar put themselves at a high risk for decay. To protect teeth from cavities stay away from sodas, fruit juices, sports drinks, and desserts. While sugar in moderation isn’t a bad thing, if you are someone who has an intense sweet tooth you could be doing your smile a great disservice.
